History
- Manitouwadge Public School was
founded in 1955 when students attended a two-room school in
a building on Manitou Road.
- A year later, the school was
moved to a six room building on Wenonah while the original
two-room school became the Municipal Building.
- In 1957 an Annex was built and
High School students took over four of the rooms. The Annex
had two floors and the elementary students used the top
floor. This added four classrooms to the original six.
- By 1959 a high school was
built and the students moved over leaving four more
classrooms for elementary students.
- In 1967 the school was added
to again. The Centennial wing was built that housed a new
library, 2 more classrooms, a kindergarten room, and a new
gymnasium.
- In the mid 80’s the Annex
found to be unsatisfactory and had to be torn down and it
was replaced with a single floor structure with 5 classrooms
in it. With the influx of young parents with young children
portables had to be added a year later.
- In the early ‘90’s the six
portables we had were shut down and a “portapac” was
added. It had seven classrooms with office and washroom
facilities. It was torn down in 2000. Today Manitouwadge
Public School stands with all of the rooms in the main
building in use and we share the facility with École
publique Manitouwadge.
