Principal’s Report

Dave Passi attended a Ministry of Education meeting, which outlined the changes to the Grade 1 – 8, Social Studies, History/Geography Curriculum. Changes to the curriculum were noted by Dave and provided to the appropriate staff so that they are aware of the changes.
Dave Passi and Stacey Donaldson attended a Fair Start planning meeting. Fair Start is a program designed to run a series of evaluations on children who will be attending Junior Kindergarten next year. The Fair Start program will take place on May 26.
Dave Passi, Belinda Schleier, Pauline Meagher and Karen Passi attended a Tragic Events Training Workshop. The workshop provided our school with suggestions as to how best set up our Tragic Events team. The four above mentioned people are in the process of putting their action plan together.
Alice Gould, our Board Literacy Trainer, helped run a workshop in Terrace Bay for Lead teachers from across the Board on Assessment in Literacy.
Dave Passi is the Chairperson for a committee to draft a policy and management guidelines for Violence Against Trustees/Employees. The draft policy has gone to the Board’s Policy Review Committee and a second draft has been developed.
Dave Passi attended a Strategic Direction Planning Meeting to create an active plan for the Board’s new Strategic Plan.
Junior Netball and Intermediate Basketball intramurals have concluded. Following March Break we will look at setting up a new set of intramurals.
The Drama Club for Grades 4 – 6 continues to run every week and is supervised by Pauline Meagher and Barb Ferguson.
Intramural curling is still continuing supervised by Mrs. Turnbull. These students who are involved in this will be attending a bonspiel in Terrace Bay on March 24th with teams from Schreiber, Terrace Bay, Marathon and Manitouwadge taking part.
Kids Are Authors have completed their project and have created a fully illustrated book, which they have entered into the Scholastic Book contest. Results will be known later this year.
The Book Club continues with students from Grades 4 – 8 reviewing and critiquing books they have read.
As you can see, the students of MPS have a variety of opportunities available to them.
Deborah MacNeil, a student teacher who spent part of our first term with Mrs. Meagher and her JK class, will be returning to our school on March 22nd. She will be in Mr. Jones Grade 4/5 class for part of the second and third terms. We wish her well in her placement.
Many thanks to the students and parents for their generous contributions towards Penny Power to assist disabled children across Northwestern Ontario. Presently, we are not aware of the amount brought into the school but judging by the weight of the coins it is a healthy amount. Once again, thanks to all for their generous donations.
The Grade 3 and Grade 6 tests will be administered between May 23rd and June 3rd. A decision as to when the testing will take place for each grade will be determined at a later date.
Nicole Cliteur has been selected to serve as a Legislative Page at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Congratulations to Nicole for being selected from the hundred of candidates from across Ontario.
